FANTASY BASEBALL – Ace Analysis
BaseballFantasyMLB
The ace analysis series will take an in-depth look at pitchers of interest throughout the course of the season. Some of the featured pitchers may be universally owned players whose performance is not meeting owners’ expectations. Most will be lightly owned pitchers who may be available on your league’s free agent list.
This week’s article will focus on a few hot starters who are owned in less than 50% of leagues on Y! and ESPN. Ownership percentages are current as of 7:00 AM on 4/25.
Jesse Hahn, Oakland Athletics:
Owned in 40% of Y! leagues and 8% of ESPN leagues
To say that Jesse Hahn has had an interesting start to the season would be an understatement. Hahn missed his turn this week because of a blister on his pitching hand, but the issue is not expected to affect him moving forward. His ERA and WHIP look phenomenal (2.12 ERA, .94 WHIP), but what can owners expect for the rest of the season?
Changes in Pitch Mix
Last season, Hahn essentially used 2 different fastballs (2 seam and 4 seam) along with a curveball that he threw about 30% of the time. The curve was, and still is, his best strikeout pitch. He used the 4 seamer more often than the 2 seamer last year. Interestingly, in 2015 he has basically flip-flopped on his fastball usage, throwing the 2 seamer more than twice as often as he uses the 4 seamer. Both pitches have similar batted ball data, but the 2 seamer induces more swings and misses. Hahn is also using his changeup more frequently this year (11.6%), effectively adding one more pitch to his arsenal.
