Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups: Running Back

  1. DeAngelo Williams
  2. Jeremy Langford
  3. Theo Riddick
  4. Kendall Gaskins
  5. David Cobb
  6. Antonio Andrews
  7. Chris Thompson
  8. Karlos Williams
  9. Charles Sims
  10. Javorius “Buck” Allen
  11. James Starks
  12. Christine Michael
  13. Thomas Rawls
  14. Tevin Coleman
  15. Ahmad Bradshaw
  16. Dexter McCluster
  17. Taiwan Jones
  18. David Johnson
  19. Matt Jones
  20. Chris Polk
  21. Spencer Ware
  22. Marcel Reece
  23. Orleans Darkwa
  24. Joique Bell
  25. Zac Stacy

You know how knees traditionally bend? Le’Veon Bell’s did the opposite. I immediately assumed he was finished for forever, but with his MRI pending, the Steelers hoped it was just a sprained MCL, which would only keep him out multiple weeks, over an ACL injury that would likely end Bell’s season. But merely hoping something happens doesn’t make it a reality. They got the MCL part correct, but it’s not sprained, it’s torn and Bell will likely be placed on IR MondayDeAngelo Williams time. Sans Bell the first two weeks, Williams sat atop the RB scoring leaders. He did this through a monopolization of the backfield volume which only a limited amount of RBs get in 2015, something he’ll regain without Bell in the picture. This one’s easy. Whatever you have to spend in FAAB $$$ to get Williams, do it. You’re getting a Top 10 RB. There’s also reports the Steelers are flying in ex-Rams bust Isaiah Pead to work out. Don’t be concerned about that.

Matt Forte’s knee injury looked far less severe, and it appears he’s escaped without season-ending implications, but a sprained MCL will keep him out around four weeks (maybe more). Jeremy Langford will inherit the full time duties in the Bears backfield while Forte’s sidelined. While their grasp on offensive opportunities should be similar (especially considering Chicago’s only other credible RB option, Jacquizz Rodgers, is on IR with a broken arm), Williams is a safer option. Williams plays in the more prolific offense, and has already proven credible in this role before. If Langford falters in with the gig, Ka’Deem Carey would likely be the next man up. But considering Carey was Forte’s primary backup last season, yet was passed on the depth chart by Langford and Rodgers, I feel comfortable projecting Langford to see the bulk of the workload. Williams is far and away the top pickup of the week. Langford is second, then there’s the rest of the RBs.

OK, if the crowd at Seahawks games get credited as an extra defender, so should the death track surrounding the field in St. Louis. It’s claimed victims the last two weeks. First, Josh McCown couldn’t put on the breaks and ended up Frerotteing himself. This week, Reggie Bush stepped on the track (which is actually comprised of invisible banana peels, not concrete) and said goodbye to his left ACL. I’m convinced Rams defenders intentionally don’t attempt to tackle players already running out of bounds in hopes their momentum will take them to the track, and letting it do the dirty work for them. Just a thought. Bush is done for the year, maybe for his career. Compounding matters, his backup this week, Mike Davis, also left the game with a hand injury. And the only reason they were actually on the field in the first place is because Carlos Hyde is dealing with a stress fracture in his foot, which is expected to keep him out until after the 49ers’ bye Week 10. That leaves Kendall Gaskins as the only remaining back in San Francisco. Monitor the health of Davis, since he’s likely the better pickup if he’s active next week versus Atlanta, however, if you’ve been crippled by a bunch of injuries, Gaskins could be a capable one-week plug-and-play giving you more time to address your RB woes. You won’t be able to acquire every new RB that pops up on the Week 9 waiver wire, so putting in a few small bids on cheaper RBs is a low-risk gamble. [UPDATEMike Davis‘ hand is broken and he’ll miss his shot to start against the Falcons. Kendall Gaskins becomes a one-week RB filler if you need him, however the 49ers did just sign former Browns RB Shaun Draughn. This could present a time-share scenario with Gaskins, but expect Gaskins to lead in snaps/touches anyway since he’s the vet of this “offense” (One game!). I’m not comfortable with it, but with so many injuries and RBs on bye week, Haskins will likely fall somewhere between 26-32 in the Week 9 RB Rankings.]

PPR players should note Theo Riddick hauled in another 6 receptions, upping his season total to an RB leading 42. AND, since the Lions are going into a bye week, most will forget his existence, maybe even drop him, so scoop him up if you want depth. With the Lions tailing, again, Riddick (37) more than doubled the snaps of Joique Bell (17) while Ameer Abdullah just wasn’t a part of the gam plan (5).

If you need a sneaky PPR RB this week to carry you through the six teams on bye, Chris Thompson should return from his back injury when Washington goes to New England. Games where the Redskins project to be down early favors the pass-catching Thompson, not Alfred Morris or Matt Jones. Like Riddick, there’s almost no TD upside, but Thompson will provide a solid base if that’s all you’re looking for from an RB2/FLEX. Just check on his injury status mid-week.

Karlos Williams finally returned to Bills practice Monday, and immediately rises back towards the top of the handcuff rankings. But, he’s worth owning over the Thomas RawlsBuck AllenChristine Michael and James Starks of the world, since he actually has TD upside when LeSean McCoy is healthy, which makes him startable if you’re desperate. With McCoy in uniform the first two games of the season, Williams averaged 7 touches and a TD a game.

Khiry Robinson was carted off the field in the NYG/NO shootout with, what’s being reported, as a broken leg. That would end his season. The absence of Khiry could allow CJ Spiller to develop some week-to-week consistency.

Antonio Andrews keeps lingering as a viable option each week. Against Houston, Andrews out touched Dexter McCluster 19:7, and massively outproduced the scat back, putting up 82 combo yards. McCluster regularly outsnaps Andrews (32:31 McCluster vs HOU; Bishop Sankey with a nice, round zero!), but that doesn’t matter. When Andrews is on the field, they give him the ball. He’s not a priority add, but in a week where so many people will be chasing Williams and Langford, RBs like Andrews will fall through the cracks and go for a lot less than they would in a regular, non-apocalyptic injury week. Although, rookie David Cobb returns from IR this week and throws a massive wrench into this situation. I like Cobb better as a long-term pickup (He’s Eddie Lacy-esque!), but it’s Andrews for this week if you need an RB.

The Orleans Darkwa buzz is finished. Before exiting with a back injury Darkwa, only played 10 snaps, last among the Giants quartet. Rashad Jennings and Shane Vereen led with 26 a piece, Andre Williams chipped in 11… Alfred Blue was the “Winner” in the Texans backfield, but all three backs saw the field. Blue played 33 snaps, Jonathan Grimes 18 and Chris Polk 15… Melvin Gordon has been banged up, but his playing time against the Ravens showed those issues are likely behind him. Gordon trumped Danny Woodhead 35:26 in snaps, while Branden Oliver was relegated back to reserve duties with 9…. Andre Ellington got that bump in playing time Bruce Arians talked about, but it all came from David Johnson, not Chris Johnson. CJ2K’s 54 snaps more than doubled Ellington’s 26, David played just 6 in spot work… And the Browns did what they always do. Duke Johnson – THE DUKE!!! – played the plurality of downs at 28, despite looking way better than Isaiah Crowell and Robert Turbin who saw 20 and 18 respectively.

If, for whatever reason, you want to own Charcandrick West’s handcuff, it’s Spencer Ware not Knile Davis.

Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups: Wide Receiver

  1. Kamar Aiken
  2. Malcom Floyd
  3. Stevie Johnson
  4. Brandon LaFell
  5. Nate Washington
  6. Marvin Jones
  7. Davante Adams
  8. Cecil Shorts III
  9. Michael Floyd
  10. Tavon Austin
  11. Ted Ginn Jr.
  12. Rueben Randle
  13. Marquess Wilson
  14. Robert Woods
  15. Justin Hunter
  16. Dorial Green-Beckham
  17. Terrance Williams
  18. Dwayne Harris
  19. Jermaine Kearse
  20. Doug Baldwin
  21. Chris Givens
  22. Jeremy Kerley
  23. Dontrelle Inman
  24. Danny Amendola
  25. Jeremy Ross
  26. Josh Huff
  27. Kenbrell Thompkins

Steve Smith Sr. is done for the year with a torn Achilles. Big time bummer. Maybe going out like this will make him reconsider retirement. But, unfortunately, that’s a 2016 question. In the present, Kamar Aiken becomes the Ravens WR to own. With Smith shelved for just over five quarters earlier this season, Joe Flacco leaned on Aiken, tossing his way 14 times over that stretch. Chris Givens is worth a look in deep leagues, as is Jeremy Ross, but Aiken is the priority add of the group. Smith’s absence should almost create an uptick in usage for Crockett Gillmore too.

Nate Washington hurt his hip hauling in a 42-yard score and never came back. He was spotted riding the bike on the sidelines, so unless we hear more information, it shouldn’t be considered too serious. Plus, the Texans enter their bye week, so Washington will be off the masses’ radar. But he’s a serious weapon to have on your team with Houston throwing as often as they do. If Nasty Nate’s already gone in your league, PPR sensation Cecil Shorts III should be back from his hamstring issue after the bye as well. You don’t even need a waiver claim to get him. Just pick him up off free agency after waiver pass.

Brandon Marshall hurt his toe and ankle, yet should be OK. If he’s not, you don’t want anyone in the passing game outside of Eric Decker. especially if The FitzMAGIC is going to be sidelined with a broken thumb. If you must in deeper formats, go Jeremy Kerley over Kenbrell Thompkins. But I wouldn’t trust either.

Kendall Wright exited with a knee injury – ANOTHER SPRAINED MCL!!! Wright’s absence benefits Delanie Walker (And Anthony Fasano) the most, but both Dorial Green-Beckham and Justin Hunter are worth a look with Marcus Mariota likely returning next week against a brutal Saints D. Tough to trust either, though.

Like Nasty Nate, Keenan Allen made a spectacular TD grab, and that would be the last thing he’d do for the day. Allen is reported to have back spasms, which shouldn’t keep him out next week, especially since he gets an extra day of rest with the Chargers playing Monday night. Stevie Johnson hurt his shoulder early against the Ravens, but returned, still, I’d take the vertical Malcom Floyd over Johnson. [UPDATE: Turns out “back spasms” were actually “kidney problems,” and Keenan Allen is now out in definitely. No time table on his return, but prepare for a multi-week absence. I still like the Malcom Floyd as the add in standard formats, but with a bulk of shorter targets now available, Stevie Johnson becomes a better PPR player through volume, especially with Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green both hobbled. Dontrelle Inman is fringe a deep league add.] ANOTHER UPDATE: Allen is out of the year now. Floyd and Johnson are must haves. Floyd = Standard; Johnson = PPR. Got it?

Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups: Tight End

  1. Jordan Reed
  2. Ben Watson
  3. Heath Miller
  4. Charles Clay
  5. Eric Ebron
  6. Vernon Davis
  7. Crockett Gillmore
  8. Austin Seferian-Jenkins
  9. Richard Rodgers
  10. Kyle Rudolph
  11. Zach Ertz
  12. Jacob Tamme
  13. Anthony Fasano

UPDATEVernon Davis was traded to Denver Monday, and most are proclaiming the former elite TE, “BACK!!!” Calm down. While Davis is an upgrade over Virgil Green and the corpse of Owen Daniels, this isn’t 2007, hell, it’s not even 2013, a shift from Colin Kaepernick to Peyton Manning isn’t that significant. Of 35 eligible QBs this season, Manning is 34th in Fantasy points per drop back (Kaepernick is 22nd); Denver’s only scored 14 offense TDs, and just seven through the air. Where does the “upside” come in? Sure, there’s an void for the “Julius Thomas role” that was vacated when he bolted for Jacksonville, and maybe Davis goes on a crazy TD binge, but does that “role” even exist that this point? It doesn’t appear that way. Davis will carry more name value than actual value, so, selling high if you already have him is a better option than picking him up. In deeper leagues, grabbing Davis to see what happens is fine, but in 12-team leagues, or smaller, leave him for someone else to waste a waiver claim or FAAB money.

There is another option, though. Since he has such name value among casual fans, picking him up, praying he scores a TD this week and selling super high is a possibility if you have the bench room. Treat HEY VERN as a volatile asset that could become super valuable on the open market quickly, allowing you to flip him immediately for a player that makes your team better. Just don’t get attached. Now’s the time to and recoup value on your Denver Players.

Again, just remember this mantra: If Jordan Reed isn’t hurt, own him and play him. It’s truly that simple.

Heath Miller’s stats came back to life with the return of Ben Roethlisberger, AND NOW he draws THEE premier match up of Week 9 against the Raiders, who, after giving up a TD to Kellen Davis (STILL ALIVE!!!), have allowed eight TDs to tight ends in seven games.

Charles Clay returns from London with the expectation that Tyrod Taylor will be back in uniform. Since the status’ of Percy Harvin and Sammy Watkins are up in the air, Clay, with Robert Woods would be Buffalo’s primary receiving options.

Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups: Quarterback

  1. Brian Hoyer
  2. Jay Cutler
  3. Derek Carr
  4. Tyrod Taylor
  5. Marcus Mariota
  6. Tony Romo

Sure, Brian Hoyer’s going into his bye week, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t add him. Hoyer hasn’t posted fewer than 17 fantasy points in any game since reclaiming the starting job mid-way through Houston’s Week 4 beat down in Atlanta… Like Hoyer, Jay Cutler hasn’t dipped below 17 Fantasy points since returning from injury Week 4… Derek Carr: Multiple TD passes in five of six games; 20+ points in four of the six. Plus, he gets KC Week 13 and SD in the Fantasy championship. He’ll be unusable at DEN Week 14, though… Tyrod Taylor: 20+ Points in three of five starts… Matt CasselGOT A FIRST DOWN!!!!!!!

Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups: Quarterback (One-Week Streaming)

  1. Jay Cutler at SD
  2. Derek Carr at PIT
  3. Marcus Mariota at NO
  4. Tyrod Taylor vs MIA
  5. Sam Bradford at DAL
  6. Kirk Cousins at NE
  7. Colin Kaepernick vs ATL
  8. Jamies Winston vs NYG
  9. Blake Bortles at NYJ

Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups: Streaming Defense

  1. CIN vs CLE
  2. BUF vs MIA
  3. SF vs ATL
  4. NYG at TB
  5. PHI at DAL
  6. NO vs TEN

The Bengals DST gets either a beat up Josh McCown or JOHNNNNYYYYYY on a short week, at home. That’s a high-end stream… Buffalo DST was dropped in enough leagues after that awful London performance, and going on bye, that they may be available to pick up against the Dolphins. I know the two teams are in much different spots than Week 3, but the Bills D-Line eviscerated Miami. They can do it again… It seems ridiculous streaming either the Giants or Saints after all dem points Week 8, but the NYG DST has been ultra opportunist, with three TDs in its past two games. And going up against Jameis and the beat up Bucs offense could help extend that TD streak. I’d only consider Saints DST if Mariota misses the game. Streaming against Zach Mettenberger (or Charlie Whitehurst!!!) has proven to be Fantasy gold.
