Pierre Garcon (Jon Collins / FSLR)

For me, the case for Garcon is simple. He’s done it all before. Sure, his 113 reception 2014 campaign has now been bookended by a pair of WR50 range performances, but in the latter stages of the draft I’m looking for someone who has the potential to be a fantasy difference maker, and with Garcon we know it isn’t just potential – we’ve seen it bear fruit.

His remarkable 2013 season, one which featured those 113 catches and 1,346 receiving yards came while Washington QBs were throwing for a meager 3,751 yards and 20 scores. That proves he doesn’t necessarily need solid QB play and just the right breaks to be productive, either.

The good news in 2015? He just might get a solid contribution from his Quarterback. Look, I’m not buying into RGIII completely, but, he’s healthy this offseason, it’s now his second under HC Jay Gruden and his offensive system, and he’s benefited from the tutelage of a QB coach this year. Certainly, things are shaping up much better around him for the year ahead, it’s just a matter of whether he can come through.

Whether Griffin does indeed turn it around, or whether we see a revolving door at QB, one thing seems fairly certain: they’re planning to get Garcon the ball. A year after that 113 reception season, he astonishingly didn’t even crack 100 targets in his first year under Gruden. Many will (perhaps rightly) take that as a sign as a player being devalued by his HC, but, the conversation this offseason has all been around needing to get Garcon more involved. Sprinkle in some apparent discontent with DeSean Jackson (who missed OTAs, for one) and a plan to reduce the offense’s reliance on him for the big play, and Garcon’s targets should trend upward.

They won’t reach his obnoxious 181 from 2013, mind you, but an 80 catch season could be within his grasp. Looking around at others who can be had near his current ADP (10.03), that isn’t something you can say for many players at that stage of the draft.

Terrance Williams (Neil Parker / FSLR)

If you flipped Terrance Williams’ first two seasons, he would be receiving plenty of hype entering his third year in the league. Though where some see concerns in his consistency, they should instead notice the huge value his current consensus ranking/ADP presents.

A history lesson …

In standard formats, Williams finished as the 27th-ranked wide receiver in his rookie season and started with six touchdowns through the first seven weeks of 2014. For whatever reason, the wheels fell off for Williams, and he was considerably inconsistent through the end of the regular season.

Most intriguing, though, are the three touchdown catches in the playoffs last year. It is also something which might be overlooked heading into 2015.

After all, he has 16 touchdowns over his past 30 games, including playoffs. And during the span, he has three separate stretches of high-end production. Five touchdowns over six games from Week 5 to Week 10 in 2013, the previously mentioned six-touchdown run to start the 2014 season, and he also finished with five touchdowns in his final four games of 2014, including the playoffs.

The concern …

Obviously, the inconsistency is an issue, and with just 66 targets and 37 receptions in 2014, touchdowns were/are integral to his fantasy output and value.

Secondly, there is a legitimate chance Williams is fourth on the depth chart for catches and targets after Dez Bryant, Jason Witten and the ground attack. Pass-grabber Cole Beasley is a sneaky target hound, too.

The case for Williams …

The Dallas running game is a serious question mark, and the Cowboys should go vertical more frequently in 2015. Dez Bryant is going to see limited field time before Week 1 and double coverage all season. Jason Witten is 33 and has seen his targets and receptions decline in three consecutive seasons.

Williams has lined up as the X and Z receiver and in the slot while working atop the depth chart all offseason. His work and progress has been lauded by the coaching staff, and perhaps most importantly, Williams and quarterback Tony Romo are finally clicking and more in-tune than ever.

A fantasy lesson …

It is fine to pluck a dark horse from the bottom of the depth chart as a leap-of-faith grab in the late rounds. Sometimes it even pays off.

However, it is wiser to take a speculative flier on a proven talent with a starting job, and hope he can put it all together after a strong offseason and two years of respectable production.

Vote for Williams here and late in drafts, and you’ll be rewarded with his best season to date.
